Canada's New Government Announces $150,000 for Improvements at Maple Ridge Harbours

July 23, 2007

Maple Ridge, B.C. – Canada's New Government will invest $150,000 this year for improvements to two small craft harbours in Maple Ridge, Randy Kamp, Parliamentary Secretary to the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced today.

"With this funding, Canada's New Government is ensuring the harbour infrastructure at the Kanaka Landing and Albion sites is kept in good condition to serve the needs of our growing community and surrounding areas," said Kamp.

Repairs and reconstruction will be undertaken at both the Kanaka Landing and Albion small craft harbour facilities in Maple Ridge. These facilities will benefit from a wharf reconstruction project that will include repairs to harbour piles, bracing and stringers.

In addition, now that the major flood concern has passed in the Lower Fraser, routine work will be undertaken at the harbour sites to assess any damage that may have resulted from freshet debris being swept down the Fraser River during periods of high water.

These projects bring the total amount of federal funding announced this year for small craft harbours in B.C. to $5.9 million.

The projects will be carried out under Fisheries and Oceans Canada's Small Craft Harbours Program in collaboration with the harbour authorities that manage and operate these facilities for the benefit of local users. This cooperation helps the federal government to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers and coastal communities.
