Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island – The Honourable Greg Thompson, Minister of Veterans Affairs, today announced on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that Canada’s New Government is investing $350,000 in emergency dredging work at the fishing harbours of Malpeque and North Lake in Prince Edward Island.
"The commercial fishery provides a livelihood for fishers and the coastal communities of Prince Edward Island," said Minister Thompson. "Canada’s New Government recognizes that our fishers must have safe passage to their harbours and fishing grounds."
Dredging at the two harbours will start immediately and, when completed, will provide safe access for fishers who rely on the harbours.
Malpeque and North Lake are both situated on the north shore of Prince Edward Island, and are a significant part of the local fishing industry, supporting its contribution to the economy of the province.
The entrance channels at Malpeque and North Lake are subject to infilling with sand and must be dredged on a regular basis to keep the harbours accessible to fishers. The work will provide safer navigation for the fishers who make use of these harbour facilities.
The projects will be funded by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, from the Small Craft Harbours budget. They will be implemented in cooperation with the Harbour Authorities of Malpeque and North Lake which manage and operate the facilities for local users. This close cooperation with clients allows the Government of Canada to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.
