Canada's New Government Invests $6.2 Million in Small Craft Harbours for Central and Northeastern Newfoundland and Labrador

July 6, 2007

Gander -- The Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, today announced $5.1 million in federal funding to start repair projects at nine fishing harbours along Newfoundland and Labrador’s central and northeast coasts, and $1.1 million to complete projects that are already underway at three other harbours.

"Having harbours in these communities that are in good shape and easily accessible is absolutely fundamental to a successful fishery," Minister Hearn said in Gander today. "One focus of Canada’s New Government is to invest in infrastructure that is meaningful for local communities and their economies. These harbour improvement projects will help these communities and reinforce the local economy."

Repair and dredging work announced today will start at Nippers Harbour, Comfort Cove, Valleyfield, Salvage, Triton West, Bridgeport, Twillingate, Fogo and Musgrave Harbour.

In addition, the work that was previously announced in 2006 at three other harbours will be completed this year. The wharf reconstruction project at Robert’s Arm will be completed as will the rubble mound breakwater construction project at Cape Freels North and the slipway reconstruction project at Moreton’s Harbour.

These projects will be implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the local harbour authorities that manage and operate the facilities for the benefit of the local users. This close cooperation with clients allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.

Details of these projects can be found in the attached backgrounder.
