Canada's New Government Invests $9.3 Million in Several Fishing Harbours in New Brunswick

July 20, 2007

MONCTON -- The Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced today that Canada’s New Government is making significant new investments for projects at several fishing harbours in New Brunswick. Altogether, Canada’s New Government will invest $9.3 million this year to support harbour revitalization in New Brunswick.

"Canada’s New Government knows how important the fishery is to the people and communities of New Brunswick," said Minister Hearn. "That is why we are committed to providing services and facilities that our fishers can depend upon."

New improvements and repair projects totalling $2.2 million will soon be underway at four southwest New Brunswick harbours in the Bay of Fundy area. Harbours that will benefit from this funding include Chance Harbour, Head Harbour, Ingalls Head and Lord’s Cove.

Five other harbours located on the northern and eastern shores of New Brunswick will receive funding of $2.5 million. These include Le Goulet, Miller Brook, Pigeon Hill, Stonehaven and Cap-de-St-Louis.

Several channel dredging interventions have already taken place at harbours in Pigeon Hill, Sainte-Marie-sur-Mer and McEacherns Point. Overall, a total investment of $475,000 has been planned for these three sites.

This new activity, in addition to ongoing projects that were previously announced and planning and engineering work at several harbours, represents an additional $4.1 million in the area this year.

These projects will be implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program, in cooperation with the harbour authorities that manage and operate the facilities for local users. This close cooperation with clients allows the Government of Canada to continue to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.

Details concerning these projects can be found in the attached backgrounder.
