OTTAWA -- The Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans,
today announced that Canada’s New Government will invest in planning work at Makkovik,
Labrador, as part of a preliminary effort to address safety and operational issues
for fishing vessels using the small craft harbour.
"Makkovik is an active and growing fishing harbour on the northern Labrador coast,"
said Minister Hearn. "Safe and accessible harbour facilities are essential for the
community and for the local economy which is focused on the fishing fleet and related
jobs in processing, transport and other harbour activities."
Small craft harbour facilities at Makkovik consist of a marginal wharf,
a finger pier, two offloading systems and an electrical shed. An engineering study,
along with an environmental assessment and a detailed cost estimate will be prepared
at a cost of $50,000 in 2007-2008.
This preliminary work will identify options to improve the operating environment
for fishing vessels that have increased in size over the years and to repair the
marginal wharf that was damaged by ice during a major storm. Actual construction
work is planned for future years.
In addition, $20,000 will be allocated to complete work this year on upland improvements
at L'Anse-au-Loup consisting of grading, leveling and resurfacing the parking
lot area to improve access for land-based harbour users.
These projects will be implemented by Fisheries and Oceans Canada, as part of
its Small Craft Harbours Program, in co-operation with the local harbour authorities
that manage and operate the facilities for the benefit of local users. Such close
co-operation with clients allows the federal government to continue to provide an
operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial
fishers.
