BRIDGEWATER - Fish harvesters at two Shelburne County harbours will benefit
from safer working conditions and improved wharf facilities when the fall fishery
opens, thanks to investments announced today by the Government of Canada.
Gerald Keddy, Member of Parliament for South Shore -- St. Margaret’s, announced
on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that
the federal government will provide $47,200 for projects at Lower Sandy Point and
Cripple Creek. Work at both harbours will start as soon as possible.
"I’m pleased that we’re able to provide this support for fish harvesters," said
Mr. Keddy. "These investments will help provide safer, more efficient harbours in
time for the opening of the fall fishing season."
At Lower Sandy Point, the existing wooden slipway will be removed and
a concrete slab
ground-out bed will be installed, allowing fish harvesters safe access to carry
out minor repairs and maintenance to their vessels. The ground-out bed may also
be used to launch vessels.
Repairs to the main wharf at Cripple Creek include replacement of three
fenders, two ladders, ladder hold-fasts, and a section of wheelguard. In addition, two floating fenders will be installed to help protect vessels and the wharf from
damage.
These projects will be implemented by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans
as part of its Small Craft Harbours Program in cooperation with the Harbour Authorities
which manage and operate the facilities for local users. Close cooperation with
clients allows the federal government to continue to provide an operable system
of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers.
