Precautionary Closure to Shellfish Harvesting: Portion of Port Mouton, Queen’s County, Nova Scotia

June 20, 2007


DARTMOUTH, NS – Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) advises the public that the harvesting of bi-valve mollusks, including oysters, clams, mussels, scallops, and quahogs, for recreational or commercial purposes is prohibited until further notice in a portion of Port Mouton, Queen’s County, Nova Scotia. Coordinates of closure area are outlined below.

This closure is due to an unidentified substance being reported in shellfish from that area.

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency is currently taking shellfish stock samples and Environment Canada will be conducting water quality testing over the next few days. When the testing is completed an evaluation will be conducted to determine if the closure will remain, be reduced or lifted completely.

The Port Mouton inside of a line drawn from grid reference 352559 4864950 (Bell Point) to grid reference 358566 4865098 to grid reference 359912 4859125 then to grid reference 356588 4858178 (Port Mouton Head). Refer to map Port Mouton 20P/15
