Canada’s New Government Invests $60,000 in Fraser River Debris Trap

February 20, 2007

VANCOUVER, B.C. – The Member of Parliament for Pitt Meadows–Maple Ridge–Mission, Randy Kamp, MP, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, that Canada’s New Government has invested an additional $60,000 to ensure continued operation of the Fraser River Debris Trap.

"I am very pleased that this money is being made available to help protect the environment of the Fraser estuary this year," said Mr. Kamp. "Canada’s New Government is committed to improving habitat in the Fraser River, ensuring the safe navigation of the river and contributing to the maintenance and protection of foreshore infrastructure."

The $60,000 will be administered by the Fraser Basin Council, which oversees the operation of the Fraser River Debris Trap. The Department is considering long-term solutions to continue funding the debris trap in the future.

The Fraser River contains large volumes of debris such as uprooted and fallen trees, which can pose significant hazards to commercial and recreational navigation and the safety and maintenance of infrastructure such as docks, bridges, dikes and underwater lines.

Situated near of the town of Hope, B.C., the Fraser River Debris Trap annually collects up to 100,000 cubic metres of material which is swept downstream from the Interior during the annual Fraser River high water period (spring freshet).
