$3.4 MILLION IN FEDERAL FUNDING ANNOUNCED FOR BRITISH COLUMBIA HARBOUR IMPROVEMENTS

May 24, 2007

Parksville, B.C. – Canada’s New Government will invest $3.4 million this year to improve 12 Small Craft Harbours (SCH) facilities in British Columbia, Dr. James Lunney, Member of Parliament for Nanaimo—Alberni, announced today on behalf of the Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

"Safe and productive harbours are key to the economic viability of B.C.’s fishing communities," said Lunney. "Canada’s New Government is working to ensure that coastal communities have the infrastructure necessary for the benefit of all users."

Funding will be provided for projects at small craft harbours in several areas:

  • Vancouver Island will receive $2.2 million in funding for improvements at six sites.

  • The North Coast will benefit from $750,000 in improvements at three sites.

  • The South Coast will receive $450,000 for improvements at three sites.

Major improvements to be carried out with this funding include: the second phase of a wharf reconstruction project at French Creek, a dredging project and wharf construction at Port Hardy, and upgrades to the breakwater at Fairview Harbour in Prince Rupert. Further details concerning these improvements and improvements at other locations are available in the attached backgrounder.

The $3.4 million worth of improvements, combined with projects announced by MP Randy Kamp last week to mitigate the impacts of potential flooding at Fraser River harbours, brings the federal funding already announced this year for Small Craft Harbours in B.C. to $4 million.

The projects will be carried out under Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s SCH Program in collaboration with the Harbour Authorities that manage and operate these facilities for the benefit of local users. This cooperation helps the federal government to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers and coastal communities.
