Masset, B.C. – Randy Kamp, Parliamentary Secretary to the
Honourable Loyola Hearn, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, announced today that
Canada’s New Government will invest $1.75 million for improvements at two small
craft harbours in B.C.’s Queen Charlotte Islands.
"Canada’s New Government recognizes the need for safe and efficient
harbours in Gwaii Haanas," said Randy Kamp. "With these improvements, facilities
will continue to serve the needs of harbour users and the communities of the Queen
Charlotte Islands."
At the Queen Charlotte City harbour, a multi-year project will
be initiated to widen the upland service area. This work will provide a functional
alternative to the existing deteriorated timber loading wharf. The project supports
a long-term harbour plan to transfer loading operations upland while adding to the
sheltered moorage areas within the existing basin. Once completed, the harbour’s
operations will be significantly enhanced through improved access and better usage
of the basin.
The work at the Skidegate harbour facility will include repairs
to the wharf and an upgrade to the floats and gangway. The project is a continuation
of previous work carried out in partnership with the Skidegate Band Council. This
work will enable the Council to move forward with improving marine access for the
community.
This $1.75 million investment, combined with recently announced
projects on the North and South Coast, Vancouver Island and Lower Mainland brings
the investment for small craft harbours in B.C. to $5.75 million.
The projects will be carried out under Fisheries and Oceans Canada’s
Small Craft Harbours Program in collaboration with the harbour authorities that
manage and operate these facilities for the benefit of local users. This cooperation
helps the federal government to provide an operable system of harbours and facilities
throughout Canada in support of commercial fishers and coastal communities.
