QUEBEC CITY – Since May 31, the services of the Canadian Coast Guard’s Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) Program have been available to recreational boaters navigating between Montreal and Trois-Rivières. The search and rescue specialists of the IRB Program, which will run until September 3, are key resources for ensuring boater safety. The mission of the IRB Program specialists is to respond to marine distress calls, assist recreational boaters in distress and promote boating safety to boating enthusiasts.
In order to fully carry out the IRB Program’s mission, 36 students at six Marine Rescue Stations in Trois-Rivières, Sorel, Longueuil, Beaconsfield, Oka and Valleyfield operate the six small rescue craft allocated to the Program for the season.
Throughout the summer, members of the IRB Program will be visiting various marinas and offering to do courtesy checks of pleasure craft to ensure the vessels have the minimum safety equipment required on board.
Boaters are reminded that all marine emergencies can be reported to a coastal station on VHF channel 16 or to the Marine Rescue Centre at 1-800-463-4393.
