Convictions Under the Fisheries Act
June 11, 2007


QUEBEC CITY— Fisheries and Oceans Canada, Quebec Region, has released a list of fishers fined for various offences under the Fisheries Act in May.

The total amount of fines assessed on fishers in the Magdalen Islands, Gaspé/Lower St. Lawrence and North Shore marine sectors comes to $12,356.16. Some gear and other goods used in fishing activities could have been seized and the proceeds from the sale of illegally caught fish forfeited.

In the Magdalen Islands, fines totalling $5,250 were assessed on offenders under the Fisheries Act. In the Gaspé–Lower St. Lawrence Area, the total amount of fines was $1,250. Lastly, on the North Shore, a total of $5,856.16 in fines were handed down to offenders. The fines ranged from $300 to $2,250 for offences involving illegal fishing, non-compliance with licence conditions, the refusal to take an observer on board, and the alteration, disruption and destruction of fish habitat.

Fisheries and Oceans Canada is mandated to protect and conserve marine resources and is ever alert for any poaching of marine resources.
