Project Sponsor
The Canadian Council of Professional Fish Harvesters (CCPFH), founded in 1995,
serves as the national sector council representing the interests of fish harvesters
at the national level in promoting the professionalism of the industry. Representing
the majority of "owner-operators" within the fishery which comprises 90% of employers
and crew, the Council’s mission is to ensure that fish harvesters have the appropriate
knowledge and skills to meet the present and future human resources needs of the
Canadian fishery.
CCPFH is governed by a Board of Directors representing commercial fish harvester
organizations from Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia,
Prince Edward Island, Quebec, New Brunswick, Manitoba and British Columbia,
including First Nations and fresh water fish harvesters. The Council is actively
working with a network of regional fish harvester certification boards, provincial
fisheries schools, the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Provincial Departments
of Fisheries and Education, Transport Canada and industry organizations.
Project Description
Extended core funding for the fiscal year 2007/2008 will support the capacity
of the CCPFH to plan, manage and coordinate a refocused skills development agenda
that addresses priority skills needs. These priorities have been identified through
a collaborative process at the national level between the Council and federal regulatory
agencies with jurisdiction for the fish harvesting sector. The Council is currently
developing innovative learning tools to respond to priorities in relation to viability,
sustainability and safety in the industry.
Funding
Human Resources and Social Development Canada will provide $499,330 in infrastructure
funding to the Canadian Council of Professional Fish Harvesters in fiscal year 2007-2008
to help the sector develop and implement an overall skills and training strategy
for the Canadian fishery. This funding provides the Council with a platform from
which they could contribute to advancing the Ocean to Plate strategy within the
industry.
