Criteria Air Contaminants (CAC)
Emission Summaries
The emissions of various air pollutants that affect human health and
contribute to air pollution problems such as smog, acid rain, and visibility
are tracked by Environment Canada. These pollutants include: Total Particulate
Matter (TPM), Particulate Matter less than or equal to 10 Microns (PM10),
Particulate Matter less than or equal to 2.5 Microns (PM2.5),
Sulphur Oxides (SOx), Nitrogen Oxides (NOx), Volatile Organic Compounds
(VOC), Carbon Monoxide (CO) and Ammonia (NH3), which are also
referred to as Criteria Air Contaminants (CAC).
These emissions are summarized by Environment Canada in its national
emission inventories which include the emissions from various sources
such as transportation vehicles, residential fuel combustion, landfill
sites, incineration, paved and unpaved roads, forest fires and all industrial
sources, including those reported by more than 8,000 facilities to the
National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) annually.
The emission inventories, trend and projections were compiled in collaboration
with the provincial, territorial, and regional environmental agencies
using the latest emission estimation methodologies and statistics. They
represent the most comprehensive emissions summaries available for Canada
and may be different from those previously published by Environment Canada
and other governmental agencies.
In an effort to provide Canadians with the most up-to-date information
on the releases of criteria air pollutant emissions in Canada, the national,
provincial, and territorial emission summaries for the calendar year
2005 are now available. These emissions summaries along with the national
emission trends and projections for the 1990 to 2015 time period can
be viewed by selecting the appropriate menu items available on this page.
The national emission inventories for the Criteria Air Contaminants
will now be updated annually by Environment Canada. The emission trends
and projections will be revised and updated during the coming months,
and the 2006 emissions inventory is expected to be available in the spring
of 2008.
