Environmental Science
The Environmental Science Program aims at providing the scientific
knowledge and tools that are necessary for the evaluation of impacts of
human activities on the aquatic environment, in support to the management
and protection of fish habitat and to the conservation of the coastal zone
and oceans in general.
To meet this mandate, the Environmental Science Program comprises four
areas or fields of research:
- Chemical contaminants in the marine environment;
- Aquatic toxicology;
- Habitat Science, and
- Marine ecosystem health.
These four components of the Environmental Science Program in the Quebec
Region cover the main environmental issues related to human activities
within the St. Lawrence drainage basin and in Northern Québec, including
industrial and municipal effluents, navigation, aquaculture, and
hydroelectric development. In particular, scientific knowledge on the
impacts of these activities in the aquatic environment is generated
through research activities, site-specific studies, and monitoring, all of
which contribute to the development of management tools for the
conservation and protection of fish habitat and aquatic resources. |
