Government Consultations with Civil Society on Issues Relating to Nuclear and Other Weapons of Mass Destruction Ottawa, ON - April 22-23, 2002

In its April 1999 response to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade (SCFAIT)'s report Canada and the Nuclear Challenge: Reducing the Political Value of Nuclear Weapons for the Twenty-First Century, the Government agreed to hold annual consultations with non-governmental organizations and other representatives of civil society on Canada's nuclear non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament (NACD) policy. The third annual consultations were held at the Lester B. Pearson Building in Ottawa on 22-23 April, 2002.

Government Consultations with Civil Society on Nuclear Issues Ottawa, ON - 10-11 May 2001

In its April 1999 response to the Standing Committee on Foreign Affairs and International Trade (SCFAIT)'s report Canada and the Nuclear Challenge: Reducing the Political Value of Nuclear Weapons for the Twenty-First Century, the Government agreed to hold annual consultations with non-governmental organizations and other representatives of civil society on Canada's nuclear non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament (NACD) policy. The second annual consultations were held at the Lester B. Pearson Building in Ottawa on 10-11 May, 2001.

Speaking Tour by Christopher Westdal, Canadian Ambassador to the United Nations for Disarmament March 2-8, 2000

In early March, Canada's Ambassador for Disarmament in Geneva, Christopher Westdal, visited a number of Canadian cities and deleivered a speech entitaled, " DR. STRANGELOVE LIVES! How I Learned to Start Worrying and Stop Loving the Bomb" . The speaking tour, which was arranged in cooperation with local universities and NGOs, included stops in Ottawa, Hamilton, Toronto, Waterloo, Winnipeg, Calgary, Victoria and Vancouver. Ambassador Westdal's tour - part of DFAIT's sustained program of outreach and public consultation - was deigned to stimulate public awareness and debate about Canadian action to improve nuclear arms control. It was also intended to enrich Canadian non-proliferation, arms control and disarmament policy analysis and discourse in preparation for the first review of the indefinitely extended Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) in April/May 2000.

The inaugural consultations were held at the Government Conference Centre in Ottawa on 3-4 February 2000.
