Consultation

Strengthening the Cultural Property Export and Import Act

About the Consultation

  • Description of Consultation

The basic structure and approach of the Act are sound, but weaknesses in it have been identified that create legal risk or impede its effective implementation. Since its introduction, there have also been advancements in Canadian law that necessitate updating the Act's provisions. Most areas of the Act identified for change are technical issues concerning its administration within government. Other changes that could be considered would impact directly on the rights and obligations of Canadians, and it is on those questions that input from the public and stakeholders will be sought.

  • Process

A discussion document will form the basis for public and stakeholder consultations through the Canadian Heritage website and two stakeholder discussion groups from the cultural and commercial sectors.

  • Timeframe

    Start Date: 2007-07-05
    End Date: 2007-09-30

  • Outcome

The Department will obtain public and stakeholder views and advice on a range of possible amendments to the Act.

How to Participate

On-line:

Stakeholders will be able to consider and respond on-line to the questions raised in the discussion document that will be posted on the Canadian Heritage website. Stakeholders will be alerted to the consultation through a variety of methods.
