Secretary of State Guergis addresses donor priorities for Nicaragua
MANAGUA—The Honourable Helena Guergis, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and International Trade, today addressed a meeting of the international community’s Extended Donor Executive for Nicaragua.
Secretary of State Guergis expressed appreciation for Canada having been selected to preside over the Global Donor Roundtable in Nicaragua for the 2007-09 period, and described this as a concrete expression of a renewed engagement in the Americas.
"We will continue to contribute to building a secure, democratic and prosperous Nicaragua through our relationships on the ground with the Government of Nicaragua and fellow donors and through multilateral channels," Secretary of State Guergis said. "By doing so, we are helping advance our values of freedom, democracy, human rights, and the rule of law."
Secretary of State Guergis recognized the role of key multilateral institutions such as the United Nations Development Programme, the World Bank and the Inter-American Development Bank, all of which are active in Nicaragua. These entities are major partners for Canada in promoting improved governance of the education system in Nicaragua, promoting private sector development and pursuing targeted reforms in public administration.
As Canada in its role as president has discussed during meetings with the Government of Nicaragua, good governance is a fundamental foundation for effective development and poverty reduction. The Global Donor Roundtable is seen as an indispensable forum for aligning donor programs with national needs.
