Public Safety Government Partners

The Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) is committed to contributing to safe and sustainable communities. We are proud to be part of the Government of Canada public safety agenda.

As one component of the larger criminal justice system, CSC collaborates with a number of agencies and departments at all levels of government. CSC works closely with its partner agencies in the Public Safety Canada portfolio, particularly the National Parole Board and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

Citizen Engagement

Community participation takes many forms. CSC works with a broad range of both community groups and individuals.

Citizens' Advisory Committee (CAC) members are an important link between CSC and the community. They help build public understanding and support for CSC's role in community safety and provide CSC management a community perspective on operational and policy decisions. The role of CACs is enshrined in the Corrections and Conditional Release Regulations (section 7).

Community Partners

CSC considers establishing positive and reciprocal relationships with Canadian communities a necessary prerequisite to support public safety. Most offenders will eventually return to the community. Upon their release, whether at the end of their sentence or via parole, successful reintegration requires the support of citizens and communities. To that end, the CSC is committed to engaging community partners and working collaboratively for safe and vibrant communities.

Volunteers

Approximately 7,000 Canadians, from all walks of life, volunteer at CSC - helping in our institutions as well as in the community. Volunteers contribute to a variety of institution-based programs including chaplaincy, recreation activities, classroom and workshop instruction, social events and cultural activities. In the community, volunteers support families of incarcerated offenders and help released offenders re-adjust to life in the community.
