2006 BOATING FATALITIES PROMPT CALLS FOR INCREASED LIFEJACKET USE

ST. JOHN'S, NL – Nearly half of the nine people who died last year in pleasure craft accidents in Newfoundland and Labrador were not wearing personal flotation devices (PFD) according to data gathered by Transport Canada's Office of Boating Safety. In preparation for the launch of National Safe Boating Awareness Week, Transport Canada would like to remind boaters of the importance of wearing lifejackets.

Small pleasure craft such as canoes, were involved in three separate incidents that claimed the lives of four people. The other pleasure crafts involved in fatalities included 16-20 foot open boats and a vessel secured alongside a dock.

Of all the fatalities, two were wearing PFDs and four were not, while it is unknown whether any type of flotation device was worn in the remaining three deaths. The fatalities occurred in various parts of the Province, including the West Coast, Central Newfoundland and in Labrador.

Reducing the number of fatalities and incidents involving pleasure craft is the primary focus of Transport Canada's Office of Boating Safety. With the summer months approaching, people are urged to focus on the following:

  • Wear lifejackets or PFDs that fit properly.
  • Examine PFDs and lifejackets for wear and tear and identify those that need to be replaced. Check for broken zippers, rips, tears, missing buckles and straps.
  • Familiarize yourself with the operating instructions of inflatable PFDs as outlined in the manufacturer's manual.
  • Check the condition of your vessel and properly prepare it for the boating season.
  • Enhance your knowledge of regulations by visiting www.boatingsafety.gc.ca.

For more information, please contact your local Transport Canada Office of Boating Safety in St. John's, Clarenville, Lewisporte or Corner Brook or call 1-800-230-3693.
