ABOUT FILMMAKER-IN- RESIDENCE

The Filmmaker-in-Residence program is an alternative model of media-making. This collaborative initiative is the National Film Board of Canada's effort to reach out to communities, and places media creation into the hands of citizens - the agents of true social change. In this pilot project, Katerina Cizek is Filmmaker-in-Residence at St. Michael's Hospital, working with partners on the frontlines: doctors, nurses, researchers, and patients. From local projects at the Inner City Health Unit, to global ones, FIR partners media with medicine in innovative ways.

Inspired by the NFB's legendary Challenge for Change Program, and fuelled by the digital revolution, Cizek will use many forms of media - film, photography, text, and an immersive online - to effect change and to tell good stories, too. Cizek's early work under the residency has been broadcast on CBC and Showtime in the USA, was featured at the XVI International AIDS 2006 conference, and was a finalist for the international Medical Media Awards.

THE FIRST OF MANY COLLABORATIONS

THE BICYCLE is a short film that follows Pax Chingawale as he cycles from village to village in Zomba District, Malawi, fighting AIDS at the grassroots. Pax volunteers with Dignitas International, headed up by Dr. James Orbinski, who accepted the Nobel Peace Prize for Mdecins sans Frontires.

THE INTERVENTIONISTS is a half-hour vrit documentary that follows the days and nights of a unique mental-health crisis team. The team, a nurse and a police officer, works out of an unmarked police vehicle, responding to 911 calls involving 'Emotionally Disturbed/Distressed? Persons'.

I WAS HERE is a media-training workshop that puts digital cameras and photoblogs into the hands of "young parents with no fixed address," so they can document their world through their own pictures and stories. TO FIND OUT MORE CLICK HERE.

UPCOMING PROJECTS include the hospital's Suicide Studies program, and a group of nurses who provide support for psychiatric nurses in Ethiopia. We're also exploring an opportunity to involve the participants of I WAS HERE as peer researchers in a street health study.
