Galaxie celebrates its 10th anniversary with record number of listeners
(Ottawa – September 10, 2007) – Today, as Galaxie turns 10 years old, more than six million households in Canada are enjoying the music offered through CBC/Radio-Canada's Continuous Music Network. With more than half of these households tuning in each month, according to a 2006 Media Technology Monitor survey, Galaxie makes discovering new artists more accessible to a growing number of Canadians.
"With more listeners than ever tuning in to Galaxie each month, the survey confirms that, 10 years in, the strength and relevance of the service continues to grow," said Eric Albert, General Manager of Galaxie. " Galaxie is well-placed to benefit from changes in media consumption because it is already seeing growing listenership beyond television, including commercial establishments who use the Galaxie service to create the perfect environment for their customers."
Galaxie in numbers:
- 6.5 million: number of music titles that are played each year.
- 6.2 million: number of Canadian households that subscribe to Galaxie.
- 1.5 million: average number of subscribers who listen to Galaxie each week.
- $4 million plus: amount dedicated to supporting the work of Rising Stars winners and music organizations in Canada since 1997. The Galaxie Rising Stars program of CBC/Radio-Canada is designed to discover, encourage and promote new artists.
- 600 plus: number of Canadian artists who have received a Rising Stars award under Galaxie’s music development program.
- Close to 50: number of programmers behind the Galaxie channels, including new international channels.
- Zero: time dedicated to advertising or chat between songs.
Galaxie is available on several platforms, including the basic service of most digital cable, satellite TV and IPTV distributors and now through some Internet service providers. Check with your local Internet service providers for availability of Galaxie.
"We’re working on an exciting multiplatform delivery model, and Galaxie on the Internet is only the beginning," Albert said. " Soon, subscribers will be able to listen to Galaxie on their cell phones, those tuning in on digital television will see more on-screen visuals, and soon will be able to perform Karaoke with Video on Demand. It’s about delivering music content when, where and how people want to receive it."
Galaxie has also recently added seven channels of international music to complement its existing 45 channel line-up, including Asian Hit Parade, a channel dedicated to top 40 East Asian pop; Chowpatty Beach, a channel featuring Bollywood hits; as well as Italian Vibe, which mixes popular Italian music from the 80s and 90s with current top 40 hits.
