Ministers focus on building a stronger future for agriculture in Canada - Growing Forward
The Agricultural Policy Framework (APF) is a five-year federal-provincial-territorial agreement on agriculture that came into force in 2003. The APF has helped create a national approach to agriculture, one that provides a solid foundation for success. Today, Canada's agriculture and agri-food sector faces a new set of challenges and opportunities. With most of the bilateral APF agreements set to expire in the spring of 2008, discussions are now underway in partnership with stakeholders to build a new generation of agriculture and agri-food policy that will lay an enduring foundation for profitability throughout the value chain.
APF programming falls under five integrated pillars:
- Business Risk Management to help farmers better manage the risks that come with the business of farming.
- Food Safety and Quality to increase consumers' confidence in the safety and quality of Canadian agri-food products.
- Science and Innovation to create new food and non-food opportunities for the sector and for Canada.
- Environment to enhance soil, water, air and biodiversity.
- Renewal to ensure producers have the skills they need to capitalize on new opportunities.
The framework also supports action in the international arena to help the sector capitalize on domestic strengths and success.
