DFO Science Sector employs highly skilled personnel in a workforce focused on scientific excellence within a scientific culture. This is a new era of multidisciplinary ecosystem science, which allows scientists, technicians and engineers the intellectual freedom to collaborate with partners in Canada and abroad. The culture fosters continuous learning and mentoring; is concentrated on strengthening scientific and management capacity, and is conscious that addressing employment equity gaps creates a fair workplace.

The Science Sector of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO) has approximately 1,700 staff, working at institutes and laboratories across Canada. These scientists, technicians, hydrographers and other staff undertake projects at the cutting edge of science. The scientists of Fisheries and Oceans Canada also work collaboratively with international colleagues and with scientists at other federal departments and academic institutions all over Canada, and with their provincial and other colleagues involved in the aquatic sciences.

Hydrography

The Canadian Hydrographic Service (CHS) is part of the DFO’s Science Sector. The CHS is a world leader in the development of electronic charting and methods for undersea mapping of Arctic waters – vital to our sovereignty and safety and essential to everyday coastal living along our world’s longest coastline. “Safe and accessible waterways” is one of the three strategic outcomes we pursue at Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
