Fisher Guilty of Offloading and Cod Quota Violations

May 1, 2007

SPRINGDALE, NL—Terry Fudge of Brighton received fines totaling $5,640.25 in Springdale Provincial Court on April 3, 2007 for two fisheries violations.

Mr. Fudge was fined $2,500 for exceeding his individual cod quota, $2,500 for failing to have his entire catch of cod monitored by a dockside observer, and an additional $640.25 for the value of 980 lbs of cod seized during an investigation by fishery officers of the Springdale Detachment.

On October 5, 2006, fishery officers observed Mr. Fudge offloading seven pans of fish at a fishing stage near his home in Brighton, while his dockside monitoring records for that day revealed he had offloaded only two pans of cod. A further investigation into Mr. Fudge’s cod landings determined that he had also exceeded his individual quota by 780 lbs.

The recording of fishing catch is an important management measure in the conservation and protection of fish stocks. Fishing regulations require fishers to offload their catch in the presence of a dockside observer.

Joint investigation fetches fine for illegal salmon netting

A cooperative investigation carried out by fishery officers of the Springdale Detachment, fishery guardians, and conservation officers from the provincial Department of Justice resulted in the conviction of Boyce Burton of Beaumont, Notre Dame Bay, for illegal salmon fishing.

He was fined $1,500 in Springdale Provincial Court on April 3, 2007.

On July 20, 2006, Mr. Burton was videotaped checking an illegal salmon net in coastal waters near Beaumont.
