Fertilizers

Canada's crops and forests are protected by the CFIA's ongoing efforts related to the regulation of plant supplements and fertilizers.

CFIA activities include:

  • administering the Canadian Fertilizer Quality Assurance Program (CFQAP);
  • registration of fertilizers, fertilizers/pesticides, and supplements;
  • review of product safety, efficacy, and labelling;
  • monitoring for active ingredients and contaminants in the market place;
  • monitoring releases of proposed new products for research purposes;
  • testing for contaminants including heavy metals, pesticides and pathogens such as salmonella;
  • verifying that products registered under the Import for Export Program are handled in accordance with requirements.
