Fertilizers
Canada's crops and forests are protected by the CFIA's ongoing efforts related to the
regulation of plant supplements and fertilizers.
CFIA activities include:
- administering the Canadian Fertilizer Quality Assurance Program (CFQAP);
- registration of fertilizers, fertilizers/pesticides, and supplements;
- review of product safety, efficacy, and labelling;
- monitoring for active ingredients and contaminants in the market place;
- monitoring releases of proposed new products for research purposes;
- testing for contaminants including heavy metals, pesticides and pathogens such as
salmonella;
- verifying that products registered under the Import for Export Program are handled in
accordance with requirements.
