Science and Technology
Science is the foundation of Environment Canada's business. The Department devotes more than 70 percent of its budget and two-thirds of its workforce to activities related to science and technology.
Environment Canada scientists work in fields such as meteorology, climatology, biology, chemistry, geology, physics and engineering. They perform inspections, assess toxic chemicals, offer advice in environmental emergencies, improve weather forecasts and warnings, predict climate change, assess the impact of major developments, collect and analyze samples, and monitor wildlife populations and pollution levels.
