Advice to clients

Only Citizenship and Immigration Canada can grant permanent resident status to foreign nationals. There is no amnesty program to grant permanent residence to undocumented individuals.

The requirements for obtaining permanent resident status are clearly stipulated in legislation and made available to applicants through Citizenship and Immigration’s websites, application kits, call centre and offices.

Applicants can have a representative provide them with additional support or advice but are in no way obliged to hire a representative for immigration matters. Citizenship and Immigration treats everyone equally, whether they use the services of a representative or not.

Citizenship and Immigration cautions applicants to beware of any representative or organization who promises that they will receive special treatment by using their services.

Any foreign national in Canada is expected to maintain their legal status. If an individual chooses to remain in Canada without status they may be subject to enforcement action.
