Minister Finley announces appointment of Citizenship Judge

Ottawa, August 7, 2007 — The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, today announced the appointment of Linda Carvery as a citizenship judge in Halifax for a three-year term.

Ms. Carvery is an entrepreneur involved in the economic and social development of her community and the arts. She has served as the Executive Director for the African Nova Scotian Training Centre and also spent many years working with youths.  Ms. Carvery is also an accomplished performer/singer and a successful recording artist who has won an East Coast Music Award for Jazz Artist of the Year.  She has been a community leader and has served on such boards as the Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women, the National Parole Board, the Congress of Black Women, Symphony Nova Scotia and the Nova Scotia Arts Council. 

Citizenship judges are responsible for making decisions with regard to citizenship applications, presiding over citizenship ceremonies and administering the oath of citizenship to new citizens.
