Minister Finley celebrates 60th anniversary of citizenship with 28 new Canadians in Simcoe

Simcoe, October 6, 2007 — The Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Citizenship and Immigration, today welcomed 28 new Canadians and their families at a special citizenship ceremony at the Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show.

“Every year, Canada proudly welcomes more than 200,000 people who bring with them their energy and talents, their hopes and dreams,” Minister Finley said. “Like generations before, newcomers to Canada today have chosen our country to build a better life for their families, and Canada’s New Government is committed to helping them succeed.”

The special ceremony was part of the celebration of the 60th anniversary of Canadian citizenship. In 1947, Canada became the first Commonwealth country to gain its own citizenship legislation. Since the first citizenship act was enacted, more than 6.1 million people have been granted Canadian citizenship. The ceremony was held at the Norfolk County Fair and Horse Show in Simcoe, Ontario.

“It’s wonderful to welcome these families to Canada, and to have this ceremony at the Norfolk County Fair,” Minister Finley said. “The organizers and volunteers have done a terrific job as they do every year to make this fair, and this special citizenship ceremony, such a success.”

Throughout 2007, Citizenship and Immigration Canada has been marking the 60th anniversary with special citizenship ceremonies and promotions in communities across the country.

“This anniversary is an opportunity for all Canadians to reflect on what they have and what it means to them,” added the Minister. “Each Canadian can play a dynamic role in defining, protecting and celebrating our shared Canadian values.”
