Major Projects Management Office (MPMO) Announced

The Government of Canada announced that a Major Projects Management Office (MPMO) has been created (external link) to improve regulatory co-ordination by providing a single, efficient point of entry into the federal regulatory process.

The MPMO was established to improve the transparency, predictability, timeliness and accountability of the federal regulatory review process for major natural resource projects, while maintaining existing regulatory responsibilities. The MPMO will report to Cabinet through the Minister of Natural Resources and is expected to be fully operational in early 2008, when it will begin accepting new projects.

As the sole nuclear regulator and single point of contact for nuclear projects in Canada, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) is well placed to help advance this regulatory initiative.

The CNSC fully supports the MPMO’s objectives and goals of improving the federal regulatory system and, as a participant, intends to work with the MPMO to share best practices and project plans pertaining to regulation of major resource projects which include new uranium mines, waste facilities and new nuclear plants.

The CNSC is committed to working with the MPMO, while its status as a quasi-judicial administrative tribunal is acknowledged.
