2007 The Year of Glenn Gould

2007 marks the Canadian musician Glenn Gould’s 75th birthday (born on September 25, 1932), 50th anniversary of his performances in Moscow and Leningrad (present day Saint Petersburg), making him the first North American to perform in the Soviet Union since the Second World War, and 25th anniversary of his tragically premature death on October 4, 1982.  Gould was a brilliant musician and unique figure recognized worldwide.  His unconventional interpretations like his legendary record début with Bach’s Goldberg Variations (1955) and eccentric personality continue to fascinate.  Gould stands alone among classical musicians.  (Sources: www.glenngould.ca and Sony Classical)
