Lace up your walking shoes and follow the
boardwalk along the Charlottetown Waterfront and explore the beauty,
the history, and the atmosphere of its quaint shops, restaurants,
and cafés! The boardwalk begins at Founders' Hall Canada's
Birthplace Pavilion and continues waterside to Confederation Landing.
This well designed parkland celebrates the site of the historic landing
of the Fathers of Confederation in 1864. Visitors to the park are
able to stroll along the pathways, relax on a park bench, or picnic
waterside. Perhaps the backdrop during your visit to Confederation
Landing will be a majestic cruise ship that regularly make Charlottetown
a port of call.
Your boardwalk stroll continues to Peake's Wharf – Historic
Waterfront Merchants, a destination alive with quaint, waterside boutiques,
craft shops, restaurants, bars, and cafés. The Hillsborough
River, a Canadian Heritage River, surrounds
Peake's Wharf and tours of the beautiful Charlottetown Harbour depart
daily.
The Hillsborough River Watershed, totalling
over 350 square kilometres, is the largest river system in Prince
Edward Island. As a river highway, it provides a direct link to our
rich human heritage, from the Mi'Kmaq who depended on the river for
food and travel, to the 1864 meeting of the Fathers of Confederation,
to the fishers of today and tomorrow. The Hillsborough also harbours
the largest saltwater and freshwater marshlands on Prince Edward Island,
providing for a diverse natural heritage.

There still is much to see! The Boardwalk
will end for a short time but the tour continues. Where the boardwalk
ends a blue line continues. Follow the blue line and you will explore
some of the Victorian mansions of Old Charlottetown. Pass by many
of our beautiful Victorian Inns and Beaconsfield Historic House tours
are available year-round.
You will pick up the boardwalk after departing Beaconsfield and Victoria
Park is ahead of you. Enjoy 37 acres of parkland where visitors can
swim, play tennis, use the sporting fields, take seaside picnics,
or simply take in the spectacular views of the mouth of the Charlottetown
Harbour. Your tour ends at Fanningbank located at the east end of
the Park. It has been the official residence of the Lieutenant Governor
since it was built in 1834. This is the site where the famous picture
of the Fathers of Confederation was taken in 1864.
Walking tours with full commentary
with the Fathers and Ladies of Confederation are available daily from
mid-June until mid-September departing from Founders' Hall.
