Sustainable Development Strategy
1997-2000
The amendments to the Auditor General Act that came into force on December
15, 1995 which established the position of Commissioner of the Environment
and Sustainable Development imposed a new responsibility on the federal
government; departments and agencies were required to prepare sustainable
development strategies for tabling in the House of Commons, and update
these strategies every three years.
Environment Canada's first Sustainable Development
Strategy was tabled in the House of Commons on April 22, 1997.
Environment Canada also prepared a Summary
Document that provides an overview of the whole Strategy.
The Commisioner monitors and reports annually to Parliament on departments'
progress in meeting their sustainable strategy objectives. Environment
Canada produced two progress reports on the implementation of its first
Strategy. These reports highlight results in the department's efforts
to meet the targets outlined in the Strategy.
