Sustainable Development Strategy
2001-2003
Environment Canada's second Sustainable
Development Strategy, tabled in Parliament in February 2001, identified
goals and objectives under four areas that the department considered critical
in making progress on sustainable development: Knowledge for Decision
Making; Incentives; Partnerships and Sustainable Communities; and, Managing
for Sustainable Development.
SDS 2001-2003 reinforced two primary roles for Environment Canada; showing
leadership by example by ensuring that departmental operations, management
practices, policies and programs supported sustainable development and,
by building capacity and commitment to sustainable development with its
partners in all sectors of Canadian society. Consultations with stakeholder
and employees were a key component of the updating process for SDS 2001-2003.
Environment Canada has produced annual progress reports on the implementation
of SDS 2001-2003. These reports describe action taken to implement targets
since the Strategy was tabled in Parliament.
