Media to play role in Charlottetown cold case

Last Updated: Tuesday, November 13, 2007 | 5:02 PM AT

Charlottetown police are working with the media to gather all the tips they can in an effort to solve a 19-year-old murder.

Police announced late last month that the unsolved 1988 murder of Byron Carr, who was found strangled and stabbed to death in his Charlottetown home, would be reopened. Police said Wednesday they are establishing a toll-free number for tips, and are working with the media and Crime Stoppers to get the word out about the case.

"We want as many people as possible to know about the review of this file, whether they are on-Island or off-Island. If they want to contact us, they need to know that there is a toll-free number," Deputy Chief Richard Collins said.

"We're in the process right now of doing some Crime Stoppers re-enactments with Global TV. And this is also going to be something that Crime Stoppers will be doing with the radio. So we're trying to reach as many people as we can through the media."

Police believe there may have been some reluctance for people to come forward in 1988. Carr was gay, and few Islanders were out of the closet in 1988. Police believe people may not have come forward with information because of the stigma attached to homosexuality at the time.

In addition to gathering new information from the public, police are hopeful new technology may provide new evidence.

The toll free number for anyone with information is 1-877-566-3952.
