National Commuter Challenge Event

Background: Go for Green is pleased to announce that the 2007 edition of Commuter Challenge will take place fromJune 3 to 9!  Preparations are now underway and Go for Green and its partners encourage you to get on board!  The program is centered on an annual National Commuter Challenge event where communities and workplaces across Canada compete for the highest percentage of participation during Clean Air Day (June 6, 2006) and Canadian Environment Week (June 3 to 9, 2007). By registering their participation online, Canadians are able to see the results of their contribution in terms of the distance they commuted sustainably and the amount of greenhouse gases they prevented from entering the atmosphere.

8th Annual Mayor’s Environmental Expo

Dates:

Description: Explore free, fun, informative exhibits and discover how we can all make positive changes for a healthier environment. This 3-day environmental showcase features over 40 exhibitors with interactive displays and activities for the whole family. Visitors will discover energy saving technologies, local conservation initiatives, pesticide-free lawncare tips and even live crocodiles!

The Expo is a great opportunity to learn how local businesses large and small, government and non-profit agencies are all working to protect and conserve our environment.

New for 2007, the Mayor’s Environmental Expo welcomes Holly Arntzen and the Fabulous Dream band’s Voices of Nature Concert series! Accompanied by a choir of over 200 students, they are singing out about the beauty of nature and the power we all have to help preserve and protect the environment - May 25th at 10:00am and noon

BCSEA Vancouver Chapter Meeting

Description: This month we have a presentation from Richard Holt of Environment Canada. Richard will discuss some of the many trade-offs of Clean Air versus Green House Gas Emissions, for example, diesel vehicles give less GHG's but more particulate matter.

Richard Holt's Bio: Richard is a Senior Air Program Engineer with Environment Canada in Vancouver.  His work is focused on reducing emissions and impacts from transportation and industrial sources in B.C. 

The presentation will be followed by a question and answer session and then an update of chapter activities and opportunities.

Free Cycling Skills Classes

Location: Dunbar Community Centre in Vancouver and the Social Rec Centre in Coquitlam

Background: The Vancouver Area Cycling Coalition is offering free Commuter Cycling Skills courses throughout the Lower Mainland. The program offers free one-day cycling skills classes throughout the Lower Mainland in the spring and summer to those who are interested in cycling for transportation but lack the confidence or skills to ride in traffic.

Classes take you through the most common situations faced when riding in traffic and provide you with tips to make biking to work a fun and regular part of your life. You'll learn to:

  • ride safely and confidently in traffic
  • check your bike for safety and adjust it to fit you
  • ride at night and in the rain
  • choose equipment and clothing
  • plan the best routes

Enviro-Fest 2007

Description: The Resort Municipality of Whistler and Whistler Blackcomb have teamed up to bring to you the 6th annual Enviro-Fest celebration, to be held in Mountain Square. This year’s theme is “Sustainability in Action”  and is geared at celebrating the successes that Whistler and area’s organizations have brought towards the sustainability movement. The celebration will be packing in a full slate of fun-filled activities to keep people informed and excited about the various environmental initiatives happening in and around Whistler, including:

  • a Whistler Environmental Business Awards presentation by the Association of Whistler Area Residents for the Environment
  • all day environmental displays by local businesses and community groups
  • live cooking demonstrations throughout the day by local chefs, courtesy of Slow Food Whistler and Farm Folk/City Folk -live music, including a special performance by crowd-pleasing Vancouverite Quest Poetics courtesy of Hilltrip and Whistler's own Kostaman Band, presented by the Bands Against Hunger Society
  • kids' face painting and activities aboard the WAVE bus
  • the opportunity to vote for your favorite environmental message/picture brought to you by the students of Alta Lake School and Spring Creek School In conjunction with this year's event, participants are encouraged to take part in the 2nd annual Wild Things scavenger hunt presented by AWARE and the Whistler Naturalists. The hunt takes place in Rebagliati park at 10 am. Be sure to get there early to take part in this popular event, suited to people of all ages. All activities are free of charge.

Tree-Cycle at WildPlay

Description: Recycling workshops will be offered following the TreeGO Full Course departures at 11 a.m., noon, 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. Participants 12 years and older can experience the full TreeGO course and then participate in a half hour workshop on recycling and living an environmentally-friendly lifestyle on Vancouver Island.

The day features recycling quizzes and numerous prizes. Adult Tree-Cycle is $41.99 plus GST. Five dollars from every admission will be donated to the Nanaimo Recycling Exchange.

Wheels for Change

Description:Wheels for Change is a campaign created by a group of British Columbians who want to provide people in this province with an opportunity to gather together and take positive action on climate change.

This campaign involves a 1000 km bike tour from Nelson to Victoria, from June 30th to July 22, 2007, that is open to all people of all ages who are interested in taking part. With your help we hope to collectively cycle 40,000 km - the equivalent to circling the Earth!

We know that many of you can’t make the three week commitment – but, you are welcome to join us for any portion of the tour - whether it is 1 km, 10 km or the full 1000 km, it all contributes to our grand total.

We are a family-friendly event, and children are very welcome to join the rides (check our website’s Bike Tour page for guidelines regarding the participation of children).

We also planning a number of community events along the way, where we will share food, music, fun activities, inspiring stories on what we can do about climate change, postcard-signing sessions for politicians, and more...

Commuter Challenge

Description: Central Okanagan residents are invited to enjoy a FREE bus ride by telling the bus driver that they are registered for the Commuter Challenge or use the code words “Clean Air Day.”  The complimentary continental breakfast will be available for anyone participating in the Commuter Challenge (riding the bus, carpooling, walking, running, cycling, in-line skating, skateboarding or kayaking), which runs from June 3rd to 9th, 2007.

Description: Aliens have arrived! And they are looking for our advice. They would like to colonize the planet Blargon 7, which has a climate and ecosystem very similar to ours. Organic Lawn Care

Clean Air Day Senior Management Triathlon

Description: Michael Horgan, the Deputy Minister of Environment Canada, will give a short opening speech on the importance of federal employees leading by example with green behaviours both at home and in the office. Senior Management Representatives from Environment Canada, Parks Canada, Service Canada and Human Resources and Social Development Canada, and Indian and Northern Affairs Canada will bike from 10 Wellington along Promenade du Portage to Phase IV to Place du Portage. Management Representatives will then jog from Phase IV to Phase III in Place du Portage.  Finally representatives will sit in the lobby area, and log into a laptop to demonstrate teleworking to complete the triathlon. Nature Walk

Description: TLC: Come join nature interpreters from Parks Canada and the Museum of Nature to learn about the natural ecosystem of the Ottawa River and what you can do to help it. There will be an optional shoreline clean up on the walk back. Meet in the TLC lobby at 11:45 sharp as the walk leaves from the Portage Bridge at noon!
PVM: Dean Nernburg of the Canadian Wildlife Service will host a nature walk in the streets around PVM talking about native plant species and tips on sustainable gardening to make your backyard a truly greener place!

Overview: DuringCanadian Environment Week, residents of the Montréal, region are invited to get rid of their end-of-life computer and electronic hardware in a safe and ecological way by dropping it off at Ecocentre depots on the island.

The Eco-circuit service is designed to provide turnkey solutions in the area of computer and electronic hardware disposal. We do not engage in any resale, refurbishment, landfill, or sale to non-official export markets. We offer customized disposal strategies for municipalities and any other organization that needs to dispose of large quantities of computer and electronic hardware. Our dismantling process follows the most stringent environmental standards and limits any risks to the health of our employees.

The disposal services that Eco-circuit specializes in are the following:

  • Collection of end-of-life computer and electronic hardware .
  • Secure, physical destruction of data.
  • Manual and mechanical dismantling of all computer and electronic parts.
  • Compilation of all relevant data (Input, Output, Weight, Units) .
  • Inventory monitoring.
  • Disposal of finished product at foundries and refineries.
  • Hardware tracking system.

Description: The Canadian Environment Awards: A Celebration of Community Achievement is a national program that recognizes individuals and groups of Canadians who have made outstanding contributions to the protection, restoration and preservation of the Canadian environment. The awards program embraces a variety of endeavours on behalf of the environment. Canadians nominated for this award of merit are leaders in their communities who are devoting their talents and energies to benefit our country.

The Canadian Environment Awards features four levels of environmental endeavour -- the Community Awards is the flagship program; the Green Team Challenge is the youth initiative; the Citation of Lifetime Achievement recognizes an individual who has shown exceptional lifelong dedication to environmental protection; and the Ideas for Life Award, which recognizes environmental excellence in the arts.

Formula Green

Location: Biosphere

Background: In celebration of Canadian Environment Week, and on the occasion of Montréal Grand Prix, the Biosphère will be presenting the Formula Green exhibit. This outdoor exhibit will bring together nearly 20 hybrid automobiles, alternative vehicles and demonstration units, as well as experts in green technologies and sustainable transport practices. The event aims to introduce to the car drivers the latest technological innovations in the field of transport, to promote the government’s environmentally sensitive transport programs and to raise the public’s awareness of the greenest means of transport.

National Environment Show

Guided Walking Tour

Description: To help celebrate this year’s Environment Week, visitors to the belvedere du lac des Battures can discover ways to help protect the environment.  A guide will teach visitors about the environmental evolution of the island.

Cache-in Trash-out

Date: June 9, 2007 – 9:00am

Location: Fultz House Museum , Lower Sackville

Cost: Open to the public

Description: Calling all geocachers to participate in a cache-in trash-out event! Our main goal will be to clean-up the Bedford-Sackville Community Trail and to assist the Sackville River Association in cleaning the river itself. Depending on the event turn-out we do have permission for two other community trails as well. The clean-up is to take part between 9:00-11:30am. Following the CITO clean-up is a geocaches BBQ from 11:30-1:00pm. The BBQ will also he held at Fultz House Museum and is going to be a great time. Along with good food and great company there will be prizes, and handouts for participants. We have partnered with the Atlantic Geocaching Association, HRM, the Sackville Kinsmen Club, the Bedford-Sackville Trials Committee, the local Boys & Girls Club, and several volunteer community groups for this event as it is part of larger week-long Community Pride event taking part in Sackville.
