CANADA’S NEW GOVERNMENT COMMITTED TO BANFF AND ITS ENVIRONMENT

BANFF, ALBERTA, October 5, 2007--Mr. Myron Thompson, Member of Parliament for Wild Rose, on behalf of John Baird, Minister of the Environment, is pleased to announce the tabling in Parliament of an amendment to Parks Canada’s Banff National Park Management Plan to improve trail networks and enhance wildlife habitat.

“This new plan shows just what can happen when a group of dedicated individuals and organizations put their heads together,” said Mr. Thompson. “The hard work of this group will ensure that Banff National Park continues to serve the community and visitors while preserving and protecting our environment.”

Residents, visitors and wildlife in Banff will all benefit from this amendment to Parks Canada’s management plan, known as the Lands Adjacent to the Town of Banff (LATB) strategy. The amendments recently table in Parliament are the result of three years of planning between Parks Canada and interested groups.

“I want to thank the members of the community – from local business owners to environmental groups - who came together to work on this successful plan,” said Thompson. “Going forward we now have a comprehensive road map that will improve the ecological conditions of the Park as well as increased public appreciation and understanding of Banff’s ecosystem.”

Since its inception in1997, the Banff National Park Management Plan is recognized as an example of leadership in involving stakeholders and integrating diverse perspectives. The dedication and innovative efforts of Parks Canada’s partners continues to serve as a powerful tool in protecting, preserving and presenting Canada’s natural and cultural heritage for present and future generations.
