Shellfish stricken by paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) Safer Shellfish

NRC marine bioscience researchers in Halifax, along with partners in the U.S., have pinpointed an important and unexpected molecular change in soft shell clams that greatly increases their resistance to toxins produced by harmful algae blooms in coastal waters known as "Red Tides".

Water drop   NRC Holmes Award Winner Dives into the Molecular Mysteries of Water

It forms approximately sixty percent of our bodies. Our cells are literally bathed in it. In spite of our dependence on water, we still don't understand why water behaves as it does. Dr. Michael Cowan, this year's NRC H.L. Holmes Award winner, plans to figure out how water works at the atomic level, particularly within biological systems. The MistShield water-mist system developed at NRC is able to effectively extinguish large-scale cooking oil fires.

 New Water-Mist Fire-Suppression System

Industrial oil cookers are essential equipment used in food processing plants. When fires occur in these cookers, they are challenging to extinguish. MistShield, a water-mist system for industrial oil cooker protection developed by researchers at NRC, is able to effectively extinguish large-scale cooking oil fires in less than 12 seconds.
