Tutorial: Ethical Conduct of Research involving Humans: Welcome

Welcome to the Interagency Advisory Panel on Research Ethics' (PRE) on-line Introductory Tutorial for the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS).

We hope you will enjoy the experience of learning about or expanding your knowledge of the TCPS.

You may wish to review the following information to ensure successful use of the Tutorial.

Navigation

You can navigate the Tutorial using two navigation bars.

Top/Bottom of Page Tool Bar Features

This tool bar allows you to move forward between sections:

Example: Top/Bottom Navigation Bar

Example: Back

This icon returns you to the previous page of the Tutorial

Example: Forward

This icon takes you to the next page of the Tutorial

Example: Mark as Completed

A logged-in user after finishing a page of the Tutorial, should press this button to move forward. Using this icon records a black check mark in the side navigation bar, marking it as completed. A whole section is checked as complete and marked in green once you have successfully answered the "Progress Checks" for that section.

Example: Help

The help button will remind you of the tool bar features.

Example: Save Location

This icon saves your location in the Tutorial. This allows you to stop and start the Tutorial as you wish. After saving, when you log-in the next time you will begin automatically where you left off.

Side Tool Bar/Menu Features Example: Side Tool Bar/Menu

The Side Tool Bar/Menu provides details of the various content sections of the Tutorial. It also grants immediate access to all sections and pages.

You do not need to complete the Tutorial in the order of the various sections.

In order to get a certificate of completion at the end of the tutorial, you must be logged-in at each session.

Example: Black check mark

A black check mark will appear when a page of the any of the sections has been completed.

Example: Green check mark

A green check mark will appear in the box when the Progress Check to that section is successfully completed.

Example: Orange check mark

An orange check mark will appear if the Progress Check questions for that section have not been correctly answered.

Case Studies

The case studies offer an opportunity to apply the information learned in a particular Section. The same 3 case studies are repeated throughout the Tutorial. However, the questions and commentary are specific to each section's topic.

Progress Checks

You can test your learning by answering the Progress Checks.

There are typically around 5 questions at the end of each Section. They are based on multiple-choice questions or check all that apply.

Hitting the "Submit" button at the bottom of the Progress Check pages will indicate which questions have been answered correctly. If they are all correct, a message will direct you to proceed in the Tutorial. If they are not all correct you will be redirected to the relevant section and asked to try again on the questions you missed.

At each session you need to be logged-in and all Progress Checks must be answered correctly in order to receive the Certificate of Completion.

Certificate of Completion

When all Sections of the Tutorial have been completed correctly, you may print out a "Certificate of Completion". You will be asked to submit your name to be printed on the certificate.

If you cannot print the certificate, please contact the Secretariat on Research Ethics at secretariat@pre.ethics.gc.ca for assistance.

Pop-up Windows

The Tutorial uses pop-up windows to allow you the option of viewing "linked" content within the Tutorial and on external websites without losing your place in the Tutorial. Please note that if you do not close a pop-up window it will continue to remain open on your computer.

Tutorial Printing Feature

You can print sections of the Tutorial by clicking on the " Print this section " located on the top right of each " Section Overview ". Alternatively, you print the whole document by clicking on the " Print All " button located at the top of the About the Tutorial for the TCPS section. The website should be consulted regularly because the text is occasionally modified to reflect suggestions by users.
