Applying for a passport

To avoid further delays in getting your passport, make sure your application is complete by using the checklist detailing the most common errors when applying for a passport.

Submitting your application

To avoid any delays, ensure that you have included all the following with your completed passport application form:

a proof of Canadian citizenship,
supplementary identification,
the photos signed by the guarantor,
the required fees, and
any valid travel document, if applicable.

By mail

Use of a certified courier/traceable mail service will reduce the delivery time of your application and ensure the safety of your documents.

In person

Canadians residing in the United States must send the application form by mail to our Gatineau office in Canada.

Note: If you submit your application in person in Canada, you will be required to appear in person both at time of submission of the application and at passport pick-up. You cannot have a third party submit an application, or pick-up a passport on your behalf.

Urgent services are available, on a case-by-case basis, for emergency or compassionate reasons. Please contact the nearest Canadian Government Office to ensure that you meet the eligibility requirements.
