Certificates of Canadian Citizenship with expiry date

Since January 1, 2007 Citizenship and Immigration Canada has been issuing Certificates of Canadian Citizenship with expiry dates to certain individuals who are subject to potential loss of citizenship on their 28th birthday by virtue of a provision of the 1977 Citizenship Act. Individuals who present such cards in support of an application for a passport should be aware of the following:

  • Where the expiry date has passed, no passport will be issued
  • Where the expiry date is within five years, a limited-validity passport may be issued with an expiry date of the day before the applicant's 28th birthday (provided all other application requirements are met).
  • Where the expiry date is in more than five years, a passport of regular validity may be issued (provided all other application requirements are met).

Applicants who are subject to this potential loss (evidenced by possession of a Certificate of Canadian Citizenship with an expiry date) should contact Citizenship and Immigration Canada for more information on how to retain their citizenship.

For more information on loss and retention of Canadian citizenship, visit Citizenship and Immigration Canada web site or contact by telephone at 1-888-242-2100.
