Assistance to Practitioners, Critics and Curators of Architecture

Deadline

1 March

Program Description

These grants support projects by practitioners, critics and curators of architecture for the public presentation of artistically significant contemporary buildings, places and gardens designed by Canadian citizens or permanent residents of Canada. The grants help practitioners to commission texts, photographs, films, models and other forms of documentation of their built projects. The grants also support critics and curators in research, writing and other aspects of editorial/curatorial work leading to the production of articles, books, exhibitions, events, films, video and television programs, with a minimum contents of 50 percent contemporary Canadian buildings, places and/or gardens.

Applicants must include a written commitment from the organization that will produce the resulting event, exhibition, book or article.

This program supports the public presentation of built work in architecture and landscape architecture. The program does not support the design and construction of buildings, places and gardens. It does not provide assistance for graphic or industrial design, installation art, the teaching of architecture, research into the history of architecture before 1945, capital expenses, basic equipment purchases, design or development of computer programs, or production of portfolios or any other material that is not intended for public dissemination by a recognized organization.

Eligibility

To apply to the Canada Council, you must be a Canadian citizen or have Permanent Resident status, as defined by Citizenship and Immigration Canada. Canadian citizens need not be residents of Canada when they apply.

You must have completed your basic training and have a minimum of three years in professional practice. Your work must have been recognized by your peers. That is, works built by practising architects must have been the subject of at least one article, publication or exhibition; critics must have at least three publications to their credit; and curators must have produced at least three exhibitions or publications.

You may not use a grant to pursue advanced studies.

You may apply for only one Canada Council for the Arts grant (with the exception of Travel Grants and prizes) per fiscal year (1 April to 31 March). You may not receive more than two Canada Council grants in any 48-month period.

Critics and curators may receive a maximum of two consecutive grants for the same project, on condition that it is a major project (such as a book or a major exhibition) and that each grant supports distinct segments of the project. However, different practitioners, critics and curators may make separate applications to carry out separate facets of the same project.

You may also apply to the Canada Council for the Ronald J. Thom Award or the Prix de Rome. However, winning either of these awards would automatically invalidate your application to the Assistance to Practitioners, Critics and Curators of Architecture program.

If an architectural firm submits an application for a grant or a prize, associates to the firm may not also apply to the same competition as individuals.

All Canada Council for the Arts programs are accessible to Aboriginal artists and artists of diverse cultural and regional communities of Canada.

Grant Amount

Grants range in value from $5,000 to $20,000. The amount requested must be rounded to the nearest thousand.

Grants contribute to costs related to the commissioning of photographs, models, films and texts about contemporary Canadian buildings. Critics and curators may also use a portion of these grants for their own professional fees and transportation costs.

Projects are expected to be part of a collaborative arrangement between practitioners, critics and curators on the one hand and the distribution organizations with which they are associated, on the other. Grants will not necessarily cover all the costs associated with approved projects.
