Expectations for the Sustainable Development Strategies

The Guide to Green Government was released by the federal government in 1995. The Guide provided initial objectives for departments and agencies to consider in their sustainable development strategies and a common approach to preparing the strategies.

The Commissioner has published expectations of the sustainable development strategies:

• In 1999, Moving up the Learning Curve: The Second Generation of Sustainable Development Strategies, outlined the Commissioner’s expectations for the second round of sustainable development strategies that were tabled in Parliament in 2001.
• In 2003, Sustainable Development Strategies — Making a Difference (PDF) set out the Commissioner's expectations for the third round of sustainable development strategies, tabled in the House of Commons in February 2004.
• In 2005, we examined the extent to which the 2004 strategies met selected expectations.
• In a letter sent to deputy ministers and departmental heads in April 2006, the Commissioner outlines her expectations and guidance for the next round of sustainable development strategies.
