Sustainable development is about decision making that takes into account the economy, society and the environment in an integrated way. All Canadians have a role to play in advancing sustainable development, including all levels of government, business and industry, civil society, community groups and citizens.
The Government of Canada promotes sustainable development through many programs, policies and initiatives. A key aspect of the Government of Canada's approach to sustainable development is the requirement for departments to develop Sustainable Development Strategies (SDSs) and table them in Parliament every three years. These strategies are important tools that help guide departments and agencies within the Government of Canada in systematically integrating the principles of sustainable development into their policies, programs, legislation and operations.

- Sustainable Development Strategy 2007-2009:
Making Progress TogetherThe theme of AAFC's fourth SDS, covering the period from 2007 to 2009, is the enhanced integration of the three pillars of sustainable development - environmental, economic and social. This strategy highlights the ongoing implementation of the Agricultural Policy Framework and examines the progress towards sustainable agriculture in Canada. Much of the work will involve collaboration with other federal departments, provincial and territorial governments, and other stakeholders as we develop the next generation of Canadian Agriculture and Agri-Food policy.
