International Francophonie

The International Organization of La Francophonie (OIF) is a political-based organization of States and Governments using the French as common language. In 2007, the Organization (created in 1971, with Canada as one of the founding members) has 55 members and 13 observers, including the Governments of Quebec and of New Brunswick. Once every two years, they gather in Summits, the aim of which is to set the priorities and strategic objectives of the Organization. The next Summit, to be held in October of 2008 in Quebec City, will take place while that city celebrates the 400th anniversary of its founding.

Working in close co-operation with the Department of External Affairs and the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA), as well with the Department of Justice of France –a leader in international Francophonie as is Canada– the Office is devoting its resources in 2007 to define, coordinate and promote the positions which will serve as the basis for the Canadian intervention during the 4th Meeting of the Justice Ministers of Countries using French as a common language, which should take place in 2008.

The Office is also member of the Francophone network of institutions in charge of human rights. It is within that network that are established the policies related to the technical help to be used to reinforce the State of Law in those countries of the Francophonie experiencing problems.
