(Letter sent to The Citizen)
Dear Editor:
I would like an opportunity to respond to the December 13th letter by Jack Hanson, "Canada Post crushing business."
Canada Post has a clear mandate from its shareholder, the Government of Canada, to offer competitive services because they allow us to continue to provide universal postal service at affordable prices to all Canadians, no mater where they live. In offering services in competition with others, Canada Post ensures it competes fairly. Each year, in our Annual Report, independent external auditors verify that our competitive services are not cross-subsidized by our exclusive privilege services.
Canada Post has served the parcel and letter markets for more than 100 years. It has done so at the speeds and in all the locations required by our customers. In today's economy, there is an increased customer demand for greater speed, flexibility and information, which is placing new demands on Canada Post's product mix. Through our interest in the rush courier market, Canada Post is seeking to become more flexible and innovative and to ensure our customers have access to all the solutions they demand. We are determined to remain customer-focused while meeting the needs of the new economy.
Let me assure you that while Canada Post is committed to growing its business in competitive markets, we will continue to do so fairly and with all respect for the rules of the marketplace.
Sincerely,
John Caines
