Risk Management Bureau

The Risk Management Bureau's mandate is to promote and protect the health of Canadians by developing, implementing, communicating and evaluating strategies to manage risks to human health associated with exposure to substances in the environment.

Specifically, the Bureau is responsible for:

  • Fulfilling responsibilities under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 to develop and implement risk management strategies to manage risks to human health associated with exposure to chemical substances in the environment
     
  • Advancing the understanding and the evaluation of environmental health risk management strategies through the generation, access, reporting, and use of monitoring and surveillance data including biomonitoring, environmental media monitoring and disease surveillance
     
  • Promoting the better understanding of the special sensitivity of vulnerable sub-populations, such as children, seniors and low-income Canadians, to environmental health risks, and taking action to reduce adverse health outcomes from environmental exposures among these groups
     
  • Providing advice, strategic direction, and coordination for SEP on risk communication and public involvement activities
     
  • Ensuring information on environmental risks to human health is provided to Canadians in an effective, timely and relevant manner so that they can make informed and proactive health decisions
