Water, Air and Climate Change Bureau

The mandate of the Water, Air and Climate Change Bureau is to protect and promote the health of Canadians from risks associated with unsafe drinking water, indoor and outdoor air pollution, and from climate change.

Specifically, the Bureau is responsible for:

  • Leading Health Canada, federal and national programs on the quality of drinking water and of air
     
  • Working with international partners to ensure coordination on air, water and climate change programs and initiatives related to health risks and benefits
     
  • Developing drinking water and air quality guidelines and objectives, treatment standards and mitigation strategies for the protection of human health, including regulations for indoor and outdoor air quality
     
  • Developing indicators and tools to assess threats, measure effectiveness of mitigation actions, and inform Canadians of risks and benefits
     
  • Contributing to the introduction of safe new technology designed to address energy need and climate change impacts (e.g., new fuels)
     
  • Directing and supporting research related to drinking water, indoor and outdoor air and climate change
     
  • Building knowledge of heath impacts of climate change and development of adaptation strategies
     
  • Forging partnerships with academia, industry, provinces and territories, communities, and other stakeholders to build consensus on addressing drinking water, air quality and climate change threats and strategies to address these
     
  • Communicating and outreach to Canadians on risks and their management
