Minister Lunn Plants Commemorative Centennial Tree at CETC-Ottawa

Ottawa , ONT – October 17 th - In honor of the 100 years of excellence in Energy and Minerals Science and Technology, Minister of Natural Resources Gary Lunn planted a commemorative tree at the CANMET Energy Technology Centre's (CETC-Ottawa) laboratory in Bells Corners.

Minister Lunn was joined in the ceremony by the MP for Nepean-Carleton, Pierre Poilievre, as well as the Energy Technology and Programs Sector's Assistant Deputy Minister, Margaret McCuaig-Johnston, the Minerals and Metals Sector's Assistant Deputy Minister, Dr. Stephen Lucas, and CETC-Ottawa's Director General, John Marrone.

CETC-Ottawa employees, both past and present, listened as the Minister and the two ADM's spoke of the outstanding achievements made in energy and minerals science and technology over the past 100 years. John Marrone then presented a commemorative shovel to Minister Lunn, who with the help of Pierre Poilievre, planted the tree.

The sugar maple will stand in the shadow of a 100 year old maple, symbolizing the bright future that CETC has to offer in scientific advancements towards a cleaner future for Canada . A time capsule, buried at the foot of the tree, commemorates the last 100 years of innovation and advancement and contains some historic work on past projects and details of recent successes.

Some of the items donated to the time capsule, included an overhead picture of the Bells Corners Complex, a document describing CETC-Ottawa's highlights from 2006-2007, as well as the Centennial brochure. The Minerals and Metals Sector, also contributed various items, including a brochure entitled “Explosives in Canada ,” A Data Base of Physical Properties of Canadian Rock , a dummy detonator, and a jar of gold ash from a Canadian Mine.

Following the tree planting ceremony, employees celebrated with centennial cake and coffee, while socializing with their fellow staff members.
